Here’s some follow-up on Lexie’s part of open house. Her teacher seemed nice. Not as 110% as Logan’s, but that’s ok. I’m sure she does a good job. Lexie showed us around the room. She showed us the guinea pig. Her teacher said that she has four of them—3 females at home. They are going to be getting crayfish soon. She said they got one batch, but they all died. Lexie’s teacher had no handouts and didn’t really speak to us as a group. There were only two parents in the room. It was the kids’ mother and I, and then one other woman. This other woman had a boy who is in Logan’s classroom, and a girl who is in with Lexie. That was kind of neat. Their mother and I were looking through Lexie’s work and especially her journal—and couldn’t read much of it at all. So we called her teacher over and asked her “is this normal writing for a 3rd grader?” and she made a face which immediately said that it was not. So I asked her “what should we do?” and she said “I don’t know, I’ve never seen writing this bad. I will ask around and get back with you.” That was alarming.
So their mother and I decided that she will re-write her home-work if it is not neat enough for us to read. Also, I’m going to have her write one sentence a night purely for neatness. She just needs more practice and needs to slow down and concentrate on doing a better job. I never noticed it being this bad last year, but I’m guessing they are just giving her more volume and she is getting sloppy to get done quickly. She gets good grades—we saw a 92% which is acceptable to us. She just needs to put a little more effort into neatness. She did well on her bit she wrote last night. She wrote “My name is Lexie. I’m eight years old.” When she gets done, I’m going to have Logan make illustrations for the sentences and make it into a book! Hopefully that will make it cool enough that she will keep doing it without a fuss. I think I’ll do the same with Logan. Anything to make learning fun and interesting…
